(some words on Grenfell Tower) No More Excuses

Something must be briefly said, because it is almost impossible to find the words, about the Grenfell Tower tragedy. The pictures are harrowing, the words infuriating. After Lakanal House, things were supposed to change. But everyone has similar experiences, and we hear the same words. Now we must have an inquiry. Councils and councillors are apparently answerable to no-one; they must be made to answer, and explain. Leaders seem convinced the parts of London they are supposed to serve actually serve them, are their little fiefdom. They look down on and do not listen to people. They treat homes and the people in them as an inconvenience, secondary to the concerns of what they think is their property portfolio, their pension plan and the wants of the developers they actually serve. Part of the plan for tower blocks on the Old Kent Road include cladding. We need independent reports, investigations and audits, inquiries into decisions made and conflicts of interest and exposing of relationships between councils, council workers and their business 'friends'. Regret isn't enough. Charge people responsible, make them less accountants and more accountable. People have to be listened to. And people need to hear answers.
